Scoutmaster recommendations are now being accepted for National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), the W. D. Boyce Council's highest youth leadership training program. NYLT is based on a course outline supplied by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and is the second step in the training continuum for youth leaders – the first being Troop Leader Training which is conducted at the Troop level.
NYLT is an incredibly fun learning experience, with Scouts working and living in patrols in an outdoor setting at Ingersoll Scout Reservation. With adult assistance, the entire course is planned and presented by other Scouts – boys leading boys, with learning and growing for the staff and participants. For many Scouts, NYLT is one of the highpoints of their Scouting career.
Who should attend NYLT?
NYLT is recommended for your Senior Patrol Leader, or a Scout who will likely hold the position in the near future. The Scout must also be at least 13 and have earned the First Class rank by the start of the course.
Scouts cannot apply for NYLT themselves – they must be recommended by their Scoutmaster. Each participant must have already taken Troop Leader Training.
How much does the course cost?
The 2010 National Youth Leadership Training will cost $210 for six days of intense leadership instruction and application. Payment for the course will ONLY be accepted at a required Orientation Meeting for all participants. Participants will be notified of time and dates of Orientation Meetings – there are usually a couple opportunities in May prior to the course. Scouts are expected to have a FULL Scout uniform for the course.
What is the application process?
Scouts cannot apply themselves – they must be recommended by their Scoutmaster. Scoutmasters are encouraged to recommend as many Scouts as they would like by filling out the NYLT Recommendation Form for each Scout. Please rank each application by order of priority. In the event that the course has more applicants than slots available, slots will be filled by selecting the first recommendation form from each troop, and then the rest of the slots will be filled with the remaining recommendations. This ensures that every troop in the Council has the opportunity to have trained youth leaders.
Application Process
- Scoutmaster completes the NYLT Recommendation Form, and returns it to the Peoria Scout Service Center by February 26, 2010. Please note that NO monies will be accepted with the Recommendation Form.
- Each recommended Scout will receive an NYLT Application Form in the mail
- The Scout and his parent(s) complete the NYLT Application Form and return it to the Peoria Scout Service Center by March 19, 2010.
- Those Scouts accepted into NYLT will be mailed an Acceptance Letter and Registration Packet around April 2, 2010.
- The Scout and his parents will bring the completed Registration Packet and $210.00 payment to a mandatory Orientation Meeting during May. The dates and locations of these meetings will be included in the Registration Packet.
