EVENTS
The Roundup
at the beginning of the
school year is the first
official event. This is
the question/answer
session and recruitment
meeting to help new
scouts join.
Our
second and last events
occur at the southern end
of Detweiller Park-
The Fall Bonfire
- The first coming
together of the new and
returning scouts. Scouts
who earned awards during
the summer are
recognized. There are
stories, songs, snacks and
drinks.
The Spring
Graduation Picnic -
Truly a picnic which
includes a dinner of
hotdogs and bratwursts.
The final awards are
given to the scouts and
the Webelos II are wished
good luck as they
continue on to the Boy
Scouts.
Fall
and Spring Campouts
at Camp Wokanda (map) - These
are 2 of the largest
events of the year. The
facilities are cabins
with wood burning barrel
stoves and a seperate
restroom facility with
running (but horrible
water). It starts on a
Friday night and runs
until Sunday morning.
Friday evening the group
gathers around the fire,
cook marshmallows, tell
stories, and sing songs. Saturday is
breakfast, a hike,
activities - both
organized and free time,
followed by lunch, more
activity time, dinner,
and then the evening
gathering. Sunday morning
is cabin cleanup and off
to home.

Landscape
planting - Pack
488 has the landscape
blueprints of Banner
Elementary School and
every year we donate and
plant 1 or 2 trees/bushes
or some ornamental
grasses/flowers and tend
to those items planted in
previous years. This is
usually a 2-3 hour event
culminating with a job
well done and (usually)
the passing out of the
Pinewood Derby kits (see
below). Please bring
gloves and shovels.
Homecoming
- All of the Dunlap
School District's Packs
gather for the Homecoming
Parade. It usually starts
at the old high school at
the north end of town and
ends at the current high
school. It is quite
chaotic so the sooner you
get to the new high
school at the conclusion
of the parade to meet up
with your son, the better
the experience is for
all.
Christmas
Carols at the
retirement community - We
meet before Christmas to
sing Christmas Carols to
the residents and then
conclude with the handing
out of the awards earned
from popcorn sales.
Pinewood
Derby - This is
probably the BIGGEST
and most anticipated
event during the year. A
small block of pine wood,
4 plastic tires, and 4
nails are what you get.
What you are supposed to
do with them is make
either the fastest
vehicle, the best
looking, or both if you
can manage it. Click for
Rules
.
Blue and Gold Banquet
- This is the
"Coming into Boys
Scouts" ceremony for
the Webelos II. It is
here that they are
awarded the Arrow of
Light, the highest award
in Cub Scouting.
Swimming
at the Riverplex
- It's March, it's nasty
outside so lets have fun
swimming at the Riverplex
in downtown Peoria. Click
here for a map.
