This season’s focus is on technology and the environment. Experience
firsthand the engineering challenges associated with reducing our
ecological impact. See what Peoria area companies are doing to help
make society’s progress sustainable. And finally, identify the challenges
you will be facing as the next generation of engineers working to
make our world a better place to live!
The purpose of the Engineering Explorer Post
is to expose local high school students to various disciplines of
engineering. The Explorer Post is sponsored by Caterpillar and is
planned and facilitated by volunteers from Cat. During the fall,
weekly meetings are held with each night focused on a particular
topic. Following a brief presentation, fundamental concepts are
highlighted with a fun activity. Past activities included bridge
building, an egg drop challenge, spaghetti & marshmallow towers,
catapults, water testing, and more!
We are seeking volunteers to help develop
the individual topics, lead meetings, and/or just show up at a few
meetings to assist the students with their projects. Your time
committment, therefore, is flexible.
Volunteers will meet just a couple of
times during the months of August and September (usually at the end
of the work day) to prepare for these meetings.
Volunteer possibilities include (but are
not limited to):
- topic design - help develop the content that will be
presented in one or more of the nights
- meeting leader - present the content to the students on
one night -- this includes both giving a talk, and leading a student
activity
- meeting helper - assist in one or more evenings'
sessions -- this may involve helping with signing up students, materials
distribution and management, assisting students with activities, etc
